THE LAST BASTION OF LAZINESS

The Last Bastion of Laziness is an exhibition by David Attwood of new sculptural assemblages that combine cat scratchers, found Garfield plush toys and infant Nike trainers.

Playing on the infamous laziness of cartoon character Garfield, the exhibition is interested in ideas around work ethic, productivity and aspiration, and how these concepts materialise in the consumer culture of late capitalism.

THE ARTISTS

David Attwood
David Attwood’s work draws on a global lexicon of well-known brands and products to explore the influence of consumer culture on human behaviour and relations. He holds a PhD in Art from Curtin University, and in 2019 completed the SOMA Summer program, SOMA, Mexico City. With theorist Francis Russell, Attwood is the co-editor of the book The Art of Laziness: Contemporary Art and Post-work Politics (Art + Australia, 2020) and runs the project space Disneyland Paris.

Lacey – Law – Lobwein is an experimental art collaboration initiated by three emerging Brisbane-based artists who share a common practice of working with digital video and screen-based media.

At Arm’s Length explores the nature of virtual and physical collaboration as a reaction to how their practices have changed as a result of the current pandemic.

This exhibition is part of Common Ground: Bus Projects x Metro Arts and an adapted version of the exhibition will be exhibited at Bus Projects in October, 2022.

THE ARTISTS

Briony Law
Briony Law is an emerging artist who works primarily with moving image and installation. Her practice explores aspects of human ecology and systems of mediation, and the potential of mediation to inform attitudes toward ecology. Graduating in 2017 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Honours from the Queensland University of Technology, her most recent projects were exhibited at Outer Space and Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity.

Olivia Lacey
Olivia Lacey employs processes of transcription and translation to explore the ambiguities, slippages or humour that can arise in interpersonal interactions. Working across moving image, installation and text, she combines referents appropriated from pop music lyrics in order to examine the romantic dialogue as an intersubjective space of exchange. Lacey graduated from a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) at the Queensland University of Technology in 2017.

Guy Lobwein
Guy Lobwein is a Brisbane-based emerging artist currently undertaking his Doctorate of Philosophy at Queensland University of Technology. Graduating in 2020 with a Masters in Philosophy, his research focuses on the use of expanded reality technologies in contemporary art and how experimental creative practice can generate experiential and critically reflective experiences.

Shift continues a series of exhibitions aimed   at uniting First Nations, Pasifika and culturally diverse creatives.

Synonymous with the computer system command pressed by a user to terminate an application and shut down the operating system, Ctrl+Alt+Del is a multidisciplinary group exhibition formed to reboot and reclaim arts and cultural spaces in a white colonial settler landscape.

How can a playwright make a difference when she doubts every word she places on the page? And does literary immortality really matter when the world is about to end?

In a messy lounge room in Brunswick East, a young woman starts to write a play – an important play, an instant classic, a story that matters. But her convict drama insists on unravelling and now our corseted protagonist has 5000 words to write and an Ottolenghi fish dinner to prepare.

Zoey Dawson mocks the Australian canon and her own artistic ambition in this meta-theatrical black comedy. This caustically funny interrogation of the creative process is both deeply personal and resonantly universal.

The Hive Collective
Hive is a new theatre collective led by Artistic Directors Heather Fairbairn, Heidi Manché and Kate Wild. These three established directors are thrilled to be producing and supporting each other’s work, creating jobs for local artists and offering quality independent theatre for Brisbane’s audiences.

Kate Wild – Director
Hive co-Artistic Director Kate Wild is the award-winning writer and director of The Sound of a Finished Kiss. Having worked in theatres throughout London, Bristol and Melbourne she has returned to Brisbane, founding Now Look Here and directing Splendour, A Slight Ache and The Seagull for the company.

Zoey Dawson – Playwright
Zoey Dawson is a theatre maker and screenwriter based in Naarm/Melbourne on the lands of the Kulin nation. Her recent credits include as playwright, Australian Realness (Malthouse Theatre), Conviction (ZLMD Shakespeare/Darebin Arts), Welcome to Nowhere (Monash University/Malthouse), Calamity (MTC NEON/ZLMD Shakespeare), The Unspoken Word is Joe (MKA/La Mama/Griffin Theatre/Brisbane Festival), Madonna Arms (I’m Trying To Kiss You/Next Wave) and I Know There’s A Lot Of Noise Outside But You Have To Close Your Eyes (I’m Trying To Kiss You/LaMama/NIDA). As well as performing in much of her own work, she appeared in a world-ish tour of The Economist (MKA/World Theatre Festival/Edinburgh Fringe), for which she was nominated for a UK Stage Award for Best Actress. As director, she staged an all-female Romeo and Juliet at fortyfivedownstairs (ZLMD Shakespeare. She won the Melbourne Festival Discovery Award for The Unspoken Word is “Joe”

What is it like to be an emerging artist in today’s arts industry? Asking this question often feels like a shout into the void, but from the 8-11 of April the Young Artist Forum shouts back.

 

Across four days, young artists will have the opportunity to hear tips, tricks and advice from industry professionals with diverse creative backgrounds. These talks, panels, workshops and events will not only provide practical and hands-on knowledge, but also give you the chance to connect with other passionate young creatives.

This exciting weekend will also feature three fresh creative developments and a visual art installation from emerging artists. So, no matter your creative discipline, you are invited to turn up and tune in for this unique peek behind the curtain.

TANGERINE HOUR  by NDRNCE 

Suburbia is set alight and bathed in grapefruit. A town burns in silence, sun slinks into retreat.

Two women lay their bodies beneath a lamppost, taking advantage of fleeting light to spill their hearts to one another, willingly accepting of the pain, gain, love and acceptance true honesty has to offer. Here, they find themselves in the Tangerine Hour. The softest and most powerful time of day, transformation is bound to take place as long as they commit themselves to honesty.

When fear overcomes truth, Mothman finds herself caught in the Tangerine Hour, unable to free herself from the flickering lamplight. Unaware of her trap, she flies in an infinite loop of denial, fixation and warped memories while trying to navigate by the wrong moon. TANGERINE HOUR is a contemporary, physical performance grounded in soft light and suburban intimacy, created by emerging performance ensemble, NDRNCE.

Join award-winning composer, mezzo soprano, sound artist and academic Dr Eve Klein in a discussion on pushing the boundaries of genre to find new ways of immersing contemporary audiences in art. Be the first to hear about City Symphony, a large-scale immersive art music experience created by QMF in collaboration with Textile Audio that is set to transform the Brisbane CBD from May 2021. Afterwards, Kitch & The Barefoot Boyz take to the stage to debut their new music which will be featured in this exciting new work.

NDRNCE is ceremony, sweat, ritual and endurance.

Born from a reverence for mundanity and unearthing of our bodies’ limits, NDRNCE present stories of transformation, failure, reluctant intimacy and willing sacrifice. Our performances are highly physical; merging complex choreographic scores with verbatim and poetic texts to embody the power of often overlooked experiences.

VISUAL ART INSTALLATION //  By Bella Deary

Presented by Metro Arts 

Enlarged animal cells take over Metro Arts! Bella Deary examines the integral shared biology of humans and animals through these magnified latex cells.

Organic Algorithm investigates biological commonalities amongst all animals by examining an intrinsic and fundamental component of any living body, the animal cell. This is achieved through the creation of a series of pink latex sculptures of these enlarged cells. Such magnification of the cell prompts viewers to re-imagine and re-define the body’s relationship to the natural environment.

These sculptures are attached to the banister of the New Benner Theatre in a formation mimicking the growth of parasitic barnacles. The implication of organic life overtaking an industrial space advocates for a future whereby natural life becomes more prominent than human constructions. This ultimately places a critical eye on our response as a society to climate change, and encourages the audience to focus on what connects us to our environment rather than what sets us apart.

BELLA DEARY

Bella Deary is an emerging Meanjin Visual Artist whose practice gathers influence from biological and ecological science, and climate activism to promote the equality of humans with the natural environment. Deary often uses latex as a key material to construct installations which resemble the organic qualities of the human body.

THE PANEL

Amelia McLeish / Nextdoor ARI 
Amelia McLeish is a contemporary visual and sound artist practicing primarily in Meanjin (Brisbane). Her practice utilises participation, sound and humour to critique the arts institutions and develop artist-based communities. She has exhibited with the IMA, Boxcopy and The Walls, and completed a studio residency with OuterSpace. Amelia is currently studying a Masters of Philosophy at Queensland University of Technology, where she is researching Artist-Run Initiatives and contemporary Australian art in the 21st century through an institutional critique-based artistic practice. She is a founding co-director of Nextdoor ARI and is also an ARI organiser at Wreckers Artspace.

Rebecca Ross / The Walls Art Space
Rebecca Ross lives on Queensland’s Gold Coast where she works as an artist, academic and director of The Walls Art Space. Rebecca’s work is concerned with mapping the junctures of site, situation and sensation. Since completing a Master of Fine Art at Queensland University of Technology (2005) she has undertaken major art projects for Festival 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and Bleach Festival, and participated in international artist in residence programs in Malta, Italy and New Zealand. Rebecca has exhibited at the Embassy of Australia in Washington D.C. U.S.A. (2012), been awarded the Rome Studio at the British School at Rome by the Australia Council for the Arts (2013) and supported by the City of Gold Coast to undertake a mentorship and travel to Los Angeles and Miami, U.S.A. (2014). Rebecca has been actively involved in the contemporary art scene in South East Queensland since the millennium and her contribution to the Gold Coast arts ecology has been recognised with an International Women’s Day Leadership Award (2020).

Lily Daoud / Habibti Collective
Habibti Collective is an emerging collective which brings together creatives from different parts of the Arab diaspora in Australia. The collective aims to generate creative connections as well between artists around Brisbane who identify as part of this community. We also aim to generate new work which explores the experiences and stories of Arab diaspora in Australia, Brisbane. Our focus is exploring; what it means to move here, grow up here, but have roots somewhere else.

Thom Browning / Imaginary Theatre
Thom is a Brisbane based arist specialising in the creation of theatre, installation and arts learning experiences for children and their communities. His experience spans performance, installation, music, and creative technology, whilst working as a director, producer, facilitator, curator, sound and video designer, and DJ. Thom is the Artistic Director of Imaginary Theatre. His work for Imaginary is regarded as amongst the most innovative sites of practice in Australian theatre for young audiences and has been seen nationally and internationally by over 180,000 people. Thom is an Associate Director with Punchdrunk Enrichment (UK), and has directed the Australian production of Punchdrunk’s ‘The Lost Lending Library’ for Festival 2018 Gold Coast, and Brisbane Festival 2020. In 2015 Thom directed the performance installation World Images for acclaimed Danish company Theatre Workshop Madam Bach which was presented in 30 venues in Denmark, Italy, France, China, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Lithuania and Greenland.

Amy-Clare McCarthy / Milani Gallery
Amy-Clare McCarthy is a curator based in Brisbane. She is currently Gallery Manager at Milani Gallery; as part of this role she curates the program for CARPARK, a project space under the building. Previously she was the Curator (Exhibition Program) at Metro Arts, and served as the inaugural chair of the board of Outer Space ARI. She is one half of McCarthy-Swann Projects, a curatorial collaboration with Kieran Swann.

Lewis Treston 
Lewis Treston is a playwright, screenwriter and an artist in residence LaBoite. Full length plays include: IRL (in development with LaBoite) Hubris & Humiliation (in development with STC), Meat Eaters (NIDA, developed by STC), Hot Tub (rehearsed readings at STC and LaBoite), Follow Me Home (ATYP) and Reagan Kelly (NIDA, Metro Arts, Lion and Unicorn Theatre). Short plays include: Condo Osaka and 1800-Real-Talk (Periscope Productions), Ghost Hunter (White Rabbit Theatre) and The Arcade (ATYP). Screenplays include: Elvistown (in development with Screen Queensland), Blood and Tinsel (Essential Media) and Fireworks (Sunday Pictures).  He is a graduate from QUT and NIDA and is currently a research student at UQ investigating camp humour.

Nathan Sibthorpe 
Nathan Sibthorpe is an award-winning contemporary performance-maker and AV Designer based in Brisbane, Australia. Currently, he is the director of Counterpilot – the collective of techno-troublemakers responsible for interactive transmedia performance works like Crunch Time (2018) and Truthmachine (2019). Nathan was previously Queensland Theatre Company’s Geek-In-Residence in 2012-14; the Festival Director of Short+Sweet Queensland from 2013-16; an Australia Council JUMP artist in 2012; and the Creative Director for Markwell Presents Cinematic Theatre Company from 2016-18. Nathan has been nominated for eight Matilda Awards, receiving the award for Best AV Design in 2017 (Blue Bones) and the Lord Mayor’s Award for Best New Australian Work in 2018 (Crunch Time). In 2011 he received a Green Room Groundling Award and in 2017 he was the recipient of the Dr Don Batchelor Award for Drama Research at QUT. Nathan teaches performance studies at QUT, where he holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts with distinction, and a Masters Degree in contemporary performance.

Jody Rallah
Jody Rallah is a descendant of the Biri Gubba, Yuggera and Warangu peoples. Rallah is an Indigenous Australian artist who works across, object making, sculptural installation, painting, sound and performance to create knowledge vesselsas embodiments of living histories. She explores how haptic processes of making can be used to create conversations spanning between generations. Connecting community throughout the generations and opening dialogues of cultural exchange to celebrate cultural wealth and enquire how materiality and experience can affect relationships between peoples, place and space and time.

Marisa Artist 
Marisa is an inter-disciplinary artist who weaves together diverse strategies for living, or coping, well in their current situation (urban, neoliberal, anthropocentric, colonial…) They work across disciplines such as embodied movement, social practice and installation both inside and outside institutional contexts, and often collaboratively. They aim to forefront knowledge systems that are often backgrounded such as embodied, sensory or intuitive knowledge. Embracing the complexity of current crises, they promote experiences that are intimate, gentle, self-aware and care-full, without sacrificing strategy and criticality. 

Stable Artspace 
STABLE is a contemporary art space located underneath a Queenslander in Meanjin/Brisbane. It aims to share a wide variety of work, from a wide variety of artists, both emerging and established. STABLE hopes to make a positive contribution to the Brisbane art community and the rich history of artist run initiatives in this city.

Do you ever feel like you’re talking in circles with your own inner voice? This dual channel installation questions the meaning we make out of the nonsensical language and world around us.

This dual channel installation utilises opposing screens to create a disjointed conversation between two videos of Nicholas Tossman. Both screens present a still close-up shot of the artist repeating a word at random intervals, with one depicting the artist saying ‘Non’ and the other ‘Sense’. By dividing the word, ‘nonsense’ into two separate terms a conflict within the word and figures becomes present.

Here ‘Non’ is being used to express the negation or lack of something, while ‘sense’ refers to the coherence of how we understand and perceive input. In stark opposition to each other these words create further nonsense as they overlap and align at random.

Through this argumentative monologue, Tossmann asks the audience to question the meaning we make out of the nonsensical language and world around us, forcing us to confront our own internal conflict and either accept or reject this chaos.

Nicholas Tossmann’s practice investigates how art and practice can be a means of purpose. As extension Tossmann explores ideas surrounding existentialism in a spiraling method, focusing on reflecting on the processes of being an artist. This self-reflexive method of working utilises: text, mapping, performance, audio, video and installation. Tossmann’s work aims to create a more conscious and introspective experience of art.

Igniting that spark between audience and brand is at the heart of Aruga – creatively-grounded PR that grabs attention like a box of glazed donuts. Since launching with Taco Bell as its foundation client in June 2017, Aruga has established itself as one of Australia’s most dynamic communications agencies, cultivating an enviable client portfolio of more than 120 big-name brands, local legends and small challenger brands. We’ve dressed zucchinis in bikinis, fought off a zombie apocalypse, wrapped t-shirts like burritos, travelled with drag queens, danced with human disco balls, and signed more death waivers than we care to think about.

Rachael Sarra / Artist

Rachael Sarra is an artist and designer whose work is an extension of her being and experiences. As a contemporary Aboriginal artist from Goreng Goreng Country, Rachael uses art as a powerful tool in storytelling to educate and share Aboriginal culture and it’s evolution. Rachaels work often challenges and explores the themes of societies perception of what Aboriginal art and identity is.

Wanida Serce / Founder + Director of Pink Matter
Wanida is a creative director, choreographer and performance artist. Professionally workinf for the last 10 years, Wanida has become an industry leader in the dance scene by educating, hosting events, performing, continually pushing boundaries through movement and action. She’s also founded Pink Matter, an independent company aimed at creating opportunities and highlighting powerful women in the community. Wanida is passionate about diversifying the dance sector and breaking down barriers and stereotypes. She continues to strive to inspire, mentor and be a pillar of representation in the community.

Come and experience music that is more than live, it’s alive. Surround sound and reactive visuals breathe music to life in this immersive experience.

What is alive in the world around you? Would you be surprised at how much people miss every day? Organicism is the idea that everything, when seen as a whole, is alive. A systemic kaleidoscope that reflects itself over and over yet reveals different aspects with every angle. It is cyclical in this way, much like ourselves. We experience cycles as individuals and societies, making our memories and their ever-changing contexts a fluid, living thing.

Music and Motion: Patterns in the Soil places you in the centre of a flowing audio-visual landscape. As if you were travelling through it, or it through you, the landscape morphs around different reflections of organicism. Perhaps it is a solo cellist, a bird on the precipice of flight, or a surge of electricity as a computer starts. These pieces of life feedback and reflect variations of themselves, creating morphing spirals of patterns.

This camp comedy brings horror genres to meet real-life climate disaster fears in a hyper-stylised performance experience. 

A snarky slime-creature is lurking in the pipes of a newly erected Meanjin (Brisbane) development called Riverbank Towers. This inner-city, upper-class apartment building is rapidly filling with the mysterious, sentient slime that won’t stop until it has consumed every cavoodle in sight. It is up to the residents to put aside their body-corporate bureaucracy, paleo vs vegan diet debates, and Instagram activism to save themselves and everyone else in the face of global disaster.

Featuring an original song by feminist, indie-pop band Bad Sext, Sludge Bank is Chance Collective’s stickiest show yet.

Technology isn’t always perfect, especially when it comes to auto-generated text, but Paean Sarkar is putting Microsoft Word’s ‘dictate’ function to the test.

Transliteration is a series of nonsensical ‘lyrics videos’ that accompany Paean Sarkar’s song renditions of several celebrated works by Bengali poet, writer and composer Rabindranath Tagore. The lyrics are produced by speaking the original Bengali lyrics into Microsoft Word’s ‘dictate’ function set to ‘English (Australia)’. The resulting text is a nonsensical stream of random english words that brings neither clarity or meaning to Tagore’s lyrics.

This incomprehensible translation explores Sarkar’s relationship to language, specifically Bengali (her mother tongue) and English (her current dominant speaking language) as a 2nd generation immigrant. Tagore is crucial to this work, due to both his influence globally and within the Bengali lexicon. His work, juxtaposed by the process of the Transliteration series, comically exaggerates the dissonance that can occur in the exchange between two languages. This artwork does not intend to disrespect Tagore, but instead hopes to start a critical dialogue around the cultural disconnect of being a bi-lingual Australian.

Using sculptural costumes influenced by ball culture, Rhanjell Villanueva explores the intersection of Filipino diaspora and queer culture against the backdrop of a colonised Australia.

Titled after the Filipino spirits it draws inspiration from, Engkanto explores the intersectional identities of the Filipino diaspora within the context of the settler society of Australia.

The re-imagination of pre-existing mythologies and the transformation of futuristic folklores in this body of work evoke a sense of empowerment to those individuals whose voices come from a place of oppression and displacement. It is imbued with a genuine benevolence to disrupt the Eurocentric lens of photography, putting forth what may exist within those voices that are often silenced, the identities that are often misunderstood and underrepresented in our society.

The microcosms of Filipino identities reveal stories of reclamation, resilience, and perseverance while concurrently defining what it means to be a person of colour working and surviving in the Australian landscape.

Rhanjell Villanueva is a Meanjin-based emerging artist, whose artistic practice critically analyses the traditional Filipino culture against the language and values of western societies. Aidan Rowlingson
Butchulla man Aidan Rowlingson is an emerging multidisciplinary artist and producer based on Jagera and Turrabal country in so-called Brisbane who interprets the world around him through acting, writing, visual art, and directing. Aidan creates and produces LGBTQIA+ First Nation performances and creative developments. Speaking to the many diverse voices within these proud communities. Through this work he has worked at a number of projects including The Lublys as part of the Queensland Performing Arts Centers Clancestry Festival and Sovereign-Tea as part of Digi Youth Arts Fri-Yayy online series. Growing up in regional Queensland Aidan learnt the importance of proud representation and the effect that art can have on a community in its connection to culture. Through his artistic practice he serves his community, taking and creating space for LGBTQI+ First Nation art that platforms our voice in our way.

Courtney Coombs
Courtney Coombs has dedicated themselves to working across several cultural sectors, including independent arts organisations, higher education, and community cultural development. Courtney is strongly committed to enriching partnerships between culture and community – promoting academic and artistic excellence and social equity through their work as an artist, academic, educator, artist, project manager, and advocate. Courtney was awarded a PhD in creative practice research in 2015 and has been the recipient of several competitive grants and awards.

Oliver Samson
Oli is a multi-genre producer, performer and voice artist. He has experienced success as a performer locally, nationally, and internationally with credits including Underground Opera’s West End To Broadway, The Harry Potter Frog Choir at Universal Studios Japan, and as a member of The Ten Tenors. Locally, Oli has starred in many new Australian works including Don’t Call Me Ishmael, Becoming Bill and Hallmarked! As a producer, Oli’s work spans both independent and public sectors. He worked on Out of the Box Children’s Festival 2018 and Queensland Music Festival 2019. In the independent sector, he has produced William Hinz’s Genesis at Metro Arts in 2019, which was recently published by Australian Plays; and co-produced the Australian Premiere of Jesse Eisenberg’s The Revisionist, which starred Kate Wilson and Michael Mandalios, and was directed by Caroline Dunphy. Oli is committed to developing and expanding opportunities for intersectional theatremakers in Brisbane and Australia.

Joseph Simons
Joseph Simons is a director and choreographer working in musical theatre, contemporary dance, ballet, opera and physical theatre. He is currently the Artistic Director of Altitude Theatre. Since winning Outstanding Emerging Artist at the Australian Dance Awards, Simons has toured extensively throughout USA, Australia, UK and Asia performing as a soloist for West Australian Ballet, Chunky Move, Opera Australia, Force Majuere, Australian Dance Theatre, DV8 Physical Theatre and The Production Company. Joseph was the recipient of the Tanja Liedtke Fellowship, sending him to Germany for residencies at Ufer Studios Berlin and the International Choreographic Laboratory in Frankfurt. His solo works First Things First and 100 Years Of The History Of Dance As Told By One Man In 60 Minutes With An Energetic Group Finale have both toured internationally. Most recently, Simons directed and choreographed The Producers at Brisbane Powerhouse.

Nimue Dreaming embraces a contemporary Indigenous style to paint her personal journey of self-discovery.

Journey of the Self  by Nimue Dreaming (also known as Kyah Nimue) is a three part acrylic work painted on wooden boards that explores Kyah’s journey of self-discovery in a contemporary indigenous style.

The smallest work is a representation of herself, a series of three connected circles slowly expanding outwards as she learns and grows. The second shows Kyah surrounded by family, being supported and loved. The final and largest work subsequently depicts Kyah creating new connections and reaching outwards into the world empowered by her self growth and the support  of her family.

Nimue Dreaming, also known as Kyah Nimue, is an emerging contemporary indigenous artist with ancestral connections to the barkindji and pitjantjatjara mobs. Through traditional markings and a strong weave connecting clay trunks, Kyra Mancktelow represents the reclamation of identity and the resilience of cultural connections

Born Under a Tree shows traditional Indigenous markings carved into hollow clay trunks, each broken section connected together by a strong weave to denote resilient cultural connections and the regaining of identity.

This work explores the history of Kyra’s Mancktelow’s family in which her great grandfather Henry Hopkins was born under a tree in Eulo, Queensland. As a child Hopkins was taken from his mother and ‘adopted’ into a Western family. This act left his mother childless and tore him away from his cultural connections.

Through this deeply personal sculptural installation, Manktelow examines the intergenerational effects of this traumatic event on her family.

THE ARTISTS

Madeleine Little
Madeleine Little is a performer, theatre maker, director and access consultant for the performing arts. Her recent credits include: Table Twelve (as co-writer with Alistair Baldwin, Metro Arts Creative Development program 2020), Hold (as playwright, director and performer, 2019), Intimate Space (as performer – Restless Dance Theatre for bleach* Festival in association with Festival 2018), Love Me; (as co-deviser, indelabilityarts 2017) and Look Mum… No Hands! [The Legless Bar Years] (as co-deviser and performer, indelabilityarts 2016-2018).

Keemon Williams
Keemon Williams is a queer interdisciplinary Meanjin (Brisbane) based artist of Koa, Kuku Yalanji and Meriam Mir descent. He utilizes a diverse range of mediums and performative elements to interrogate the relationships between location, personal histories, and the manifestation of culture in a postcolonial world. His practice seeks to critically examine facets of his identity and its intrinsic tethering to the wider context of being “Australian.” Responding to realms of architecture, cultural production and pseudo-ethnic representations, Keemon reconciles a sense of indigeneity and occupancy within the everyday.
