David Megarrity is a writer, composer, musician and performer creating at the intersection of music, performance and projected image.

Recipient of a Lord Mayor’s Performing Arts Fellowship in 1998, his performance inventions include Backseat Drivers (Queensland Theatre’s first overseas tour), Ukulele Mekulele (La Boite), Show (QT), The Empty City and Bear with Me.

His works have played at the Sydney Opera House, around Australia and abroad. Publications include plays for young people such as Gate 38 and anthology Destinations (Playlab). He’s been finalist in the George Landen Dann Award (2000), Inscriptions Edward Albee Scholarship (2012), and Rodney Seaborn Playwrights Award (2016).

Picture book The Empty City (Hachette) was selected by the Children’s Book Council of Australia as a Picture Book of the Year ‘Notable Book’ (2008). His stage adaptation was a finalist in the 2012/3 Queensland Theatre’s Queensland Premier’s Drama Award (QPDA) and premiered at the Brisbane Powerhouse in 2013.  David won the QPDA in 2018 for his play The Holidays.

Having played in many bands and composed songs and soundtracks for stage, screen and radio, David has released 13 albums of original music in various audio incarnations. Recent music-driven performances include faux folk duo Warmwaters, “the surprise hit of the Queensland Cabaret Festival” (Brisbane Times 2014), and Tyrone and Lesley (Twice finalist in the Queensland Music Awards) whose 2017 album Optimism was dubbed Ukulele Record of the Year by Ukulelehunt. David’s short film collaborations won a number of awards and nominations, including Official Selection Cannes International Film Festival 2000.

Full-time artist and part-time Senior Lecturer in Drama at the Queensland University of Technology, he received the 2008 Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence (Innovative and Creative Practice) and completed his PhD in 2015, an exploration of composed Theatre.

Celebrating over 20 years together, Tyrone and Lesley are a songwriting and performance duo (made up of David Megarrity and Samuel Vincent) who pair the high and low in a wild and binary orbit in the dark and sparkling space around the ukulele. Having one foot on the theatre stage and the other on the music stage is a striking stance which rewards audiences little and large from the Sydney Opera House to out the back of a fruit shop in West End. Playing festivals around the nation and overseas, they’ve released 5 albums. The latest, Optimism, was dubbed Ukulele Recording of the Year.

Tyrone & Lesley in a Spot
by David Megarrity & Nathan Sibthorpe

The inimitable Tyrone and Lesley celebrate 20 years of brilliance by entwining their beautiful, funny music with moving images of skies, suns and moons, clarity and clouds, flickering bulbs and high windows.

A ukulele-led dance of screen and song where there are no wallflowers, Tyrone and Lesley in a Spot will transport you all the way to exactly where you are. It’s funny ha ha, funny weird and a little bit funny valentine. It’s Tyrone. It’s Lesley. It’s their high spots in bright lights.

Charming, poetic, and unique – you will never see anything like this.

Bear with Me
by David Megarrity

When was the last time you took your bear to the theatre? Now is the time!
Sometimes being a teddy bear is no picnic, so being cherished makes the rougher moments bearable.
An intimate concert especially for younger bears, their children (and their grown-ups) Bear With Me is playful, ukulele-ful and made for joining in. This warm, fuzzy, participatory show explores the joys and turmoil of everyday life through music and performance.
See you there, and bring your bear!

“In the disquiet of our times it is heartening to know that such a deceptively simple, comforting performance has the ability to engage and engross.”  seesawmag

“This show carries a charm that has you humming the tunes all the way home” Stage Whispers

“A unique and adorable production”  – theupsidenews

Three strangers in a laundromat, all using dryers, tumble together musically.

This new project from David Megarrity, Samuel Vincent and Nathan Sibthorpe (Tyrone and Lesley in a Spot) introduces multi-instrumentalist Matt Hsu and live mixer James See to a spin cycle of loops and maximum minimalism.

Sox will turn itself inside out,  moving from the presentational to the participatory, meaning it looks like a show that we’re doing for kids and their carers, but it turns out we’re all doing the show together.
