Re-enactment

Developing his new work Re-enactment, across this two-week residency at Ferryman’s Hut, Joshua will invite a select group of witnesses to be part of this process as he takes his body on a journey of a ritual that will potentially provide the hidden clues to some of Queensland’s most elusive and baffling mysteries.

Using elements discovered during ‘Transmission’ – a process developed by both Wei Zen Ho and Joshua Pether; re-enactment will turn its attention to some of Brisbane’s most notorious cold cases and use the body as the tool to seek more ‘information’ while allowing for a deeper and intense sense of contemplation and listening to occur.

Joshua Pether
Joshua Pether is of Kalkadoon heritage but lives and works on Noongar country in Western Australia. He is an experimental performance artist, dancer and choreographer of movement, temporary ritual and imagined realties. His practice is influenced by his two cultural histories- indigeneity and disability and the hybridization of the two with particular interest in the aesthetics of the disabled body and also that of the colonized body. 

His work and practice have been supported through the Australia Council and DLGSC (local) funding. As an independent artist he has had work shown in Perth, Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney and New York and has performed in festivals and events such as the Undercover Artist Festival, Yirramboi Festival, Next Wave, APAM 2018, Short Cuts, MoveMe Festival, SuperCell Festival of Contemporary Dance In Situ and The First Nations Dialogues in New York. He is the creator of two solo works, ‘Monster’ and ‘Jupiter Orbiting’.

Iranian Australian photographer and video artist Katayoun Javan draws on personal and public stories to present notions of family, home, memory, displacement and the Iranian Diaspora.

Subtitle Iran is a research-based photo series that explores the ways Western film and television has perceived Iran for the past several decades, mainly before and after the Iranian Revolution of 1979.

THE ARTISTS

Katayoun Javan

Katayoun Javan is an Iranian Australian photographer and video artist. Through documentary photography, portraiture, and use of found photos and videos, she draws on personal and public stories in order to explore notions of family, home, memory, displacement, and the Iranian Diaspora. Most of her works are somehow related to Iran from a migrant point of view.  She completed a Master of Fine Art in research in 2013 and has taken residencies in Australia and exhibited in solo and group shows in Australia, Iran and internationally.

My Father the piano

James’ new work My Father the Piano explores the artist’s relationship with their working-class family.

Through the recent shared act of deconstructing an old piano, an incidental type of sonic practice emerged from socioeconomic necessity.

Throughout the residency, the materials and documentation from this process will be reassembled into a text, video and sound installation.

MORE ABOUT THE WORK

ARTISTS’ STATEMENT:

“Recently, my parents had to urgently move out of their rental home and decaying student piano prevented this. My father suggested that we deconstruct the piano and dispose of it. 

On the surface, such a shared act posed dissonance: my occupation as a composer/artist within upper/middle-class dominated cultural spaces – but also my deep connection and relationship to my father, and his enmeshment within fragmented and precarious histories. 

Throughout this process, I heard my father’s groans and strains; the piano wood cracking; the deep, dark resonance of the strings reflecting these sounds back; a father-becoming-piano and piano-becoming-father.

Within this work, the materials and documentation from this process are reassembled into a three-part, text and sound installation. Central to this work is the notion of the “hammer” which strikes the strings of the piano, and the hammer my father used to “play” and “deconstruct” the piano – during our sort-of-duet; ultimately, mediating and working-through conceived and socially imposed differences and notions of social-class through sincerity, and humour.”

Almost Heaven

In her new work Almost Heaven, Olivia Lacey revisits a childhood fascination with Olivia Newton-John as the roller-skating muse from Xanadu (1980).

Over the course of the residency, Lacey will develop a series of portraits of Newton-John in order to explore the intersubjective (but often one-sided) relationship between fan and idol.

Lacey’s interest in fan art stems from research into the use of romantic language in pop music and the ambiguous dialogic exchange that is often implied through the open-ended nature of love song lyrics. Like romantic language, the fan-idol relationship can be framed in terms of ideas of obsession and longing. Through this new body of drawing works, Lacey aims to examine her role as both fan and artist within this dynamic.

Olivia Lacey
Olivia Lacey employs processes of transcription and translation to explore the ambiguities, slippages or humour that can arise in interpersonal interactions. Working across moving image, installation and text, she combines referents appropriated from pop music lyrics in order to examine the romantic dialogue as an intersubjective space of exchange. Her current practice is focused on the amateur performative spaces of karaoke and fan-made content. She also practices as part of the artist collective Lacey-Law-Lobwein. Lacey graduated from a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) at the Queensland University of Technology in 2017. Recent solo and group exhibitions include:
At Arm’s Length, Metro Arts, Brisbane 2021; Now That You’re Here, Boxcopy Contemporary Art Space, Brisbane 2019; Love Me, Love Me, Metro Arts, Brisbane 2019; and We Could Meet Again, 3331 Arts Chiyoda, Tokyo 2018.

Set in downtown Brisvegas, and based on the lives of two female leads (Lucy and Katie), inspiration is drawn from Broad City, Lano & Woodley and Blackbooks to explore the unique hilarity of their lives in our city.

Born out of a desire to extend tenderness,  elevation and appreciation to culturally diverse voices, ANTHEM ARI aims to provide a dedicated platform to celebrate the practices of First Nations, diasporic, and LGBTQI+ identifying artists of colour in Australia.

Co-founders Lucy Nguyên-Hunt, Reina Takeuchi, Rhanjell Villanueva, Ruaa Al-Rikabi and Keemon Williams will transform the gallery into a simulated museum space, exorcising the sordid histories of institutional race representation and intergenerational trauma embedded within the experiences of the artists.

THE ARTISTS

Lucy Nguyễn-Hunt
Lucy Nguyễn-Hunt is an interdisciplinary Vietnamese and Samoan/Cook Islander Australian artist with an abiding passion for sharing lived experiences through her artistic practice. Namely, this manifests as dismantling preconceived notions of identity through the lens of a camera and her culturally hybrid and queer gaze. Working predominantly in photography and moving image and implicating the body as self as a material form, Nguyễn-Hunt investigates the structures in place with consistently others outliers to a socially constructed ‘standard’. Regarding her practice as a safe space for licking her own wounds, vulnerability, self-awareness and authentic representation is at the heart of her work. Nguyễn-Hunt works to prioritise representation and visibility, and voice lived experiences through the process of self-negotiation and preservation.

Reina Takeuchi
Reina Takeuchi is an Australian-Japanese artist-researcher, dance maker, curator and writer interested in interdisciplinary collaboration and facilitating embodied experiences of contemporary art. She explores how sensorial experience can be enhanced through ritualistic performance, interactive installations and time based media. Her work utilises choreographic processes and the transitory qualities of sound and action to meditate on transculturation, displacement, diaspora and the ethereal experiences of her peripatetic upbringing across Japan, India, Thailand and Australia. These processes allow for a clarity of somatic contemplation for the artist and she, in turn, explores the potential for this sensitivity to be shared with the viewer.

Rhanjell Villaneuva
Rhanjell Villanueva is an emerging Meanjin-based (Brisbane) Filipino artist whose practice critically analyses the traditional Filipino culture against the language and values of western societies. In response to his upbringing, his practice traverses the multitude and intricacies of cultural identity by unraveling post-colonial patterns and cultural conflict. Working across an array of media including sculpture, moving image, and video installation, Villanueva materialises deep transcultural knowledge and narratives rooted from oppression and the feeling of displacement. The resulting works focus on decolonising the eye, demonstrating the subjectivity of ‘foreign in a domestic sense’ towards the metaphysics of Filipino Futurism. By sharing tales of the diaspora, he aims to engage with other persons of colour and urge them to consider what they could become, beyond what they are expected to be.

Ruaa Al-Rikabi
Ruaa Al-Rikabi is a Iraqi-Syrian Australian emerging contemporary artist whose practice investigates themes of intersectional identity, self-preservation and re-representation of desirability. Ruaa’s practice looks at the rich experience of intersectional identities and how this can be linked to experiences of displacement and difference, shown through an ongoing development of a living archive of her self-identity. Within her practise, Ruaa aims to create space for other marginalised communities by encouraging radical expression of self and multifaceted identities. Ruaa employs materials which she deems significant to her self-identity as surrogates to encapsulate her lived experiences, this includes hair, food and photographs. Through rejecting essentialist assumptions about intersectional BIPOC identity, Ruaa’s practice aims to engage in an act of decolonisation that empowers and liberates intersectional identities.

Keemon Williams
Keemon Williams is an Indigenous Meanjin-based (Brisbane) artist of Koa, Kuku Yalanji and Meriam Mer descent. He utilizes a diverse range of mediums and performative elements to highlight the relationships between location, personal and cultural histories, and the broader context of being “Australian.” Rendering speculative embodiments of culture through contemporary forms, his work investigates culture’s innate ability to adapt to oppressive systems and claim agency through new material processes. Keemon employs this ontology through interrogations of architecture, fashion, mass production and new media devices. By critically engaging with digital and consumerist realms, and their potential for “ethnoplastic” ventures, Keemon reconciles a sense of indigeneity within the everyday.

On the Shoulders of Giants explores the transition and adaptation of culture, toxic masculinity and intergenerational trauma of First Nations men navigating their way through everyday life.

Anchored in body based storytelling, eXcelsior is an intra-cultural Queensland Indigenous dance collective made up of proud Murri, Koori and Torres Strait Islander artists connected to Brisbane. They use art forms including cultural and contemporary dance, physical theatre and poetry, to express their intergenerational experiences.

THE ARTISTS

Leonard Donahue
Leonard Donahue is a descendant from the Djabugay people of the rainforest in far-north Queensland. Leonard has pursued a career focused on Indigenous tourism and the arts. Following high school, Leonard moved to Brisbane to study at the Aboriginal Centre for the Performing Arts and has since worked professionally in the industry in theatre, film and television, storytelling, music and dance. It was at ACPA Leonard met fellow eXcelsior crew and has since performed with them at the Sydney Opera House, festivals around Australia and at Festival 2018 in the Commonwealth Games. In addition to his role as Senior Indigenous Officer at Dreamworld Corroboree, Leonard travels the country providing song, dance, poetry and story experiences to schools and communities.

Tibian Wyles
Tibian is Girramay & Kalkadoon tribes descendent from North Queensland. He is a graduate of The Aboriginal Centre for Performing Arts (ACPA) in Brisbane. He appeared in Black Diggers (Sydney Festival, Brisbane Festival) as well as appearing in several ACPA productions including: Oedipus the King, Romeo & Juliet, & Spirit Of the Lore. He is an Ambassador for DigiYouth Arts, and worked with Indigenous students to present the play Glad Tomorrow. More recently Tibian appeared in Legs on the Wall’s production ‘The Man with the Iron Neck’ written by Ursula Yovich which premiered at Brisbane Festival 2018 then toured major festivals around the country in 2019, Sydney Festival, Darwin Festival and Adelaide Festival. His dance appearances include Baru (Sydney Opera House), Clancestry (Byron Bay Blues Festival); Treaty (Brisbane Festival) and Backwards (Queensland Poetry Festival); Festival 2018 in the Commonwealth Games. Outside of eXcelsior Tibian toured as a dancer with DJUKI MALA to Lebanon, Egypt and across Europe.

Joshua Thaiday
Born and raised in Cairns and of Torres Strait Islander heritage, Joshua is one of The 2015 Yumpla Project team members at Phunktional Ltd. With a Diploma in Performing Arts, he is currently undertaking an Advanced Diploma in Acting at the Aboriginal Centre for the Performing Arts. Joshua has had numerous roles in the Queensland 150th Anniversary, in ‘Soul Music’, ‘Souls Entwined’ and ‘Up the Ladder’, all performed at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre. Onscreen performances include appearances in the Queensland Government Advertisement for HIV Awareness, the ‘Talking Families’ Queensland Government Advertisement, and as an extra in the television series ‘The Straits’. Joshua is a skilled dancer and talented actor, evident in his comprehensive background participating in community events such as the 2012 Brisbane Festival, the Indigenous Festival ‘Clancestry’, the 2015 Acting Showcase, NAIDOC Week dance events, the Asia World Cap Draw, Festival 2018 in the Commonwealth Games.

Benjamin Creek
Benjamin is a founding member of eXcelsior, dancer/actor and graduate of Aboriginal Centre for Performing Arts (ACPA) in Brisbane with a major in Acting. Benjamin also writes and performs poetry for the collective and has performed at Festival 2018 in the Commonwealth Games and Sydney Opera House and Boomerang Festival in association with Byron Bay Blues Fest. He continues his traditional dance practices with his community dance group who have also performed at Dance Rites competition.  

Benjin Maza
Benjin Maza is a Brisbane based singer/songwriter, dancer and actor. In 2012 he toured with Queensland Theatre’s production ‘Stradbroke Dreamtime’ directed by Sue Rider, covering regional Queensland. Benjin debuted at La Boîte Theatre Company with Steven Oliver’s ‘From Darkness’ as a part of Brisbane Festival 2019. Benjin has also been a part of numerous creative develop- ments in musical theatre, theatre and dance at venues such as QPAC, Laboite Theatre and more. Benjin is also a part of an Indigenous Fusion dance group called ‘eXcelsior’, performing at various events such as; the NRL’s All Stars, Sydney Opera House’s ‘Homeground’, Woodford Folk Festival and Boomerang Festival at Byron Bay Blues Fest and the Commonwealth Games in 2018. Benjin joined forces with artist, ‘Alinta’ to birth ‘Balairi’ – performing original music and covers at community and corporate events. Benjin’s most recent work has been with Karul Projects as a part of  ‘Silence’, debuting Brisbane Festival 2020.

Manduway Dutton
Manduway completed an Advanced Diploma in the Performing Arts at the Aboriginal Centre for the Performing Arts in Brisbane studying piano, songwriting and recording technology in 2014. In 2016, he went on to complete a Bachelor of Music degree (specialisation jazz and pop) at the Central Queensland Conservatorium of music where he majored on the piano. He has performed at the Boomerang Festival in 2017

How did it come to this…Dad, standing in a police station on the border of NSW and QLD, reporting his 89 year old brother as a missing person?

When he’d left his home in the mountains of Chieti, Abbruzzo all those years ago he never imagined that the devastation his village suffered during WW11 would follow him all the way to a glittering new life on the glorious Cold Ghost.  Strange after all, that the “paradise” he found could turn into l’inferno before you could blink your eyes three times…

Cold Ghost is an expedition through time, where familial tapestries reveal patterns upon patterns. Can the tightly-woven fabric of our blood-land connections be unstiched to free us from the ransom of our own identities?

Joaquin Gonzales presents 777-Eleven, a Catholicised convenience store selling all the Catholic necessities nobody asked for. Open 24/7 for your convenience.

This solo site-specific installation transforms Metro Arts’ window gallery and surroundings to a Catholicised convenience store composed of a series of sculptural artworks.

Gonzales explores the theme of religious doubt and uses humour as a tool to playfully criticise outdated Catholic traditions and objects.

Gamilaraay-born artist Debbie Taylor-Worley presents a body of work in response to returning to the places of birth and childhood, and listening to the country speak.

Wun-ga-li Ngurrambaa Winanga-li utilises motifs based on Gamilaraay carved trees and incorporates weaving and embroidery techniques, drawing attention to the cultural practices of Taylor Worley’s female ancestors. Each work has been created in, and alongside significant waterways on country, reflecting Gamilaraay women’s responsibility to protect the waterways.

Debbie Taylor-Worley
As a Gamillaraay woman, who has lived, for the most part, a colonised life, my project is about decolonising my own mind, beliefs and narratives, and going a step further, to reconnect to my spiritual roots. I’m treading a path to connect to my culture, my country and the spirituality of my ancestors, for I believe that Indigenous knowledges in ways of knowing, being and doing are in fact our planet’s only chance of survival. My art practice is a means of cementing that connection to country and culture.

My artmaking processes and materials are profoundly tied to connection to Mother Earth and Ancestors, ceremony and ritual, culture and community, and places and memory. It describes the trials and tribulations of navigating unfamiliar waters, the treading softly on the ground and resisting of greedy mis-use and destruction of the earth’s resources.

The Weatherman is a new video work that takes an experimental approach to queer remembrance, ensuing processes of memorialisation.

Developed in response to the historic murders of gay men in Sydney during the late 1980s and early 1990s, The Weatherman eschews systematic retelling of this history and instead draws on a vast archive of violence against queer people. 

McGrath draws from over twenty real and fictional texts, to recall the disappearance (murder) of the TV broadcaster Ross Warren in 1989.

Callum McGrath
Callum McGrath is an artist and researcher currently based in Naarm/Melbourne. McGrath’s work applies experimental archival and historiographic approaches to reconceptualise methods of queer memorialisation. His research-led projects resist the hegemonic and institutional structures of archival repositories and instead work toward methods of queer remembrance where queer temporalities and futurity can take precedent. McGrath has exhibited widely in institutions and galleries around Australia and in 2021 is commencing a Masters of Fine Art (Research) at Monash University.

COLLISION  is a cross-pollination of contemporary circus and street dance, teaming together two Brisbane powerhouses, Casus Circus and Mad Dance House. 

Casus Circus is a pioneer contemporary circus company known for ground-breaking acrobatics and physical poetry with a reputation as a leader on the world stage. Mad Dance House is a mover and shaker in the urban and street dance international scene, responsible for some of Australia’s most charismatic and celebrated street dancers.

Natano Fa’anana – Director
Natano’s unique style of performance draws inspiration from his Samoan roots, fused with acrobatics, aerials and dance. He has achieved international recognition through his work with the award winning Polytoxic Theatre Company, as Co-creator and Performer in Briefs Factory, and in his current role as Co-founder, Creative Director of Casus Circus.

Ché Pritchard – Creative Consultant / Choreographer
Coming primarily from a Street Dance background Ché has already had a long and diverse career Performing, Choreographing and Directing in the commercial dance world. From stadium entertainment to street performance to stage productions, Ché has choreographed as part of the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles and the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. Ché is also the Creative Director and Lead Choreographer of one of Brisbane’s highest profile annual social events Dancing CEOs. His passion for movement creation and his positive energy are infectious and ever present, always being noted and appreciated within his project teams. 

Amy Stuart
Amy found her love of circus when she was 14 at the Woodford Folk Festival. She then joined Flipside Youth Circus and made her way into the performance troupe. After performing at Woodford when she was 16 & 17, she auditioned for the Flying Fruit Fly Circus School and soon began training their full time. Two years on, she graduated with solo acrobatic Tightwire, Teeterboard, Partner Acro, Tumbling and Group Bike. She has recently performed in We Live Here a show based on the lives and experiences of children from Hummingbird House a palliative care facility. Following this she has started a collaborative show demonstrating the strength and awesomeness of women, Boss Squad. Boss Squad has performed nationally and Internationally and is still touring.

Riley Colquist
From a young age Riley trained with Flipside circus in Brisbane, travelling and performing nationally. After 12 years at Flipside, Riley moved to Melbourne to train at the National Institute of Circus Arts. He returned to Brisbane a year later to develop personal projects. He endeavours to continue his circus education at Ecole Nationale de Cirque in Quebec. Riley’s specialty is contortion and handstands. He is inspired by the Mongolian and Chinese methods of skill and strength. However, it was the art of storytelling and rich audience connection which drew him to a career in circus. His passion continues to drive his creativity and challenge him as an artist.

Ela Bartilimo
Ela is a Brisbane based circus performer and visual artist. Starting in youth circus, she went on to study aerial rope and group acrobatics at NICA in Melbourne. During her time as a student she performed with Company 2, One Fell Swoop, and co-created and performed in Four or More Circus. After graduating and she joined Circa Contemporary Circus as a full time acrobat. For two years she toured the world with the company performing in magical places like Austria, Germany, France and the UK. Now back in Australia as an independent artist, Ela strives to create work that will spark a change in her audience and reflect the world, therefore she is constantly experimenting, improvising and adapting to her observations.

Wanida Serce
Wanida is an established performer, choreographer and creative director who is passionate about uplifting the community and championing diversity. Some of the projects she has been involved with are: dancing for Jessica Mauboy, Commonwealth Games, The Special Olympics, Puma as well as featuring in campaigns for Vice, Absolut Vodka, Fox Sports & Universal Store. She is also a prominent teacher in the industry and is involved in mentoring teens and young adults with disabilities at BAMD, Brisbane’s first inclusive dance program. Wanida is a proud woman of colour that is successfully working in multiple fields of street/commercial dance – performing, teaching, choreographing, battling, judging and producing work. She continues to strive to inspire, mentor and be a pillar of representation through her all female dance collective, Pink Matter. 

Sam Evans
Sam Evans is a Brisbane-based dance artist, specialising in popping, robotics, and animation, while also being adept in many more dance styles. Despite only started his dance journey at the age of 17, Sam quickly made a name and career for himself in the entertainment world. Performing nationally and internationally with Swagamama, and as a founding member of Equals was an Australia’s Got Talent grand finalist in 2016. Sam currently works as an independent contractor for both corporate and creative works, while also working as an entertainer at Dreamworld and a Hip Hop teacher for Superstars Dance. 

Ben Garcia
Ben Garcia also known as BennyBucho is a professional street dancer based on the Gold Coast. He’s a part of many world class crews and companies including Team Cream, Swagamama, Skill@will, Trick Nasty Crew, Equals, Elements Collective and Geed Up Music. With 19 years experience Ben is recognised as one of the best Bboys in Australia!

This remarkable film documentary celebrates the 30th anniversary of Australia’s most iconic performing arts company: Bangarra Dance Theatre.

Firestarter – The Story of Bangarra is a historically important film that takes the viewer through Bangarra’s birth and spectacular growth. It recognises Bangarra’s early founders and tells the story of how three young Aboriginal brothers – Stephen, David and Russell Page – turned the newly born dance group into one of Australia’s leading performing arts companies.

Through the eyes of the Page brothers and company alumni, Firestarter explores the loss and reclaiming of culture, the burden of intergenerational trauma and crucially, the extraordinary power of art as a messenger for social change and healing.

Featuring anonymous true tales of love from across the globe, this heart-warming performance is delivered through song and speech by powerhouse women with vocals to match.

Stories will be shared, drinks may be split, and we promise not to tell anyone how you smudged your lipstick…

THE ARTISTS

Natasha Veselinovic
Natasha Veselinovic is musical theatre performer, writer, and visual artist. She graduated from the Queensland Conservatorium with a Bachelor of Musical Theatre, and also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Applied Theatre (Griffith University). Her previous theatre credits include, Cover Madame Thenardier, in Cameron Mackintosh’s Les Miserables (Asia and Dubai tours), The Railway Children (Alex Parker Theatre Company, Cadogan Hall, London), The Girls From Oz (London Hippodrome, and Live at Zedel, London), Woman 2, 35mm: A Musical Exhibition (Australian Premiere), Claire, UniReach (Australian Regional Tour), and Killer Queens (Brisbane Powerhouse). Natasha has co-written and performed in three cabarets – Villains (Brisbane Powerhouse & QACI), Once Upon A Time (Toulouse Lautrec, London), and Lesbian Love Stories (Brisbane Powerhouse & RPAC).

Chloe Taylor
Chloe Taylor graduated from the Queensland Conservatorium with a BMus (Musical Theatre) in 2013. Since then she has performed professionally both nationally and internationally as a singer, dancer, actor and writer. Some theatre credits include – Hold Me Touch Me/The Producers (Brisbane Powerhouse), Ensemble & Dance Captain/State of Origin:The Musical (Princess Theatre), Victor/Victoria/ Six Inches (Brisbane Powerhouse), Blonde/The Girls From Oz (UK tour), Belle/Beauty & the Beast (UK Tour), Cinderella/Cinderella (UK Tour), Vocalist & Dancer/Boy&Girl (Brisbane Powerhouse), Miss Gardner/Carrie (Brisbane Powerhouse). She has also co-created three cabaret shows that she performed in – Villains, (Brisbane Powerhouse & QACI), Once Upon A Time (Toulouse Lautrec, London), and Lesbian Love Stories (Brisbane Powerhouse & RPAC).

Jahla Black
Jahla is a Musical theatre performer and writer. Having only recently graduated in 2020 from the Queensland Conservatorium with a Bachelor of Musical Theatre, she is fresh on the scene. Whilst at the Conservatorium she was cast as The Drowsy Chaperone in The Drowsy Chaperone, Monica in Elegies and Elphaba in Wicked. Since graduating, Jahla Co-wrote and performed in Committed, Content, Confused, to a sold-out season at the Wynnum Fringe festival. Jahla is stoked to be joining The Local Lesbians for Lesbian Love Stories at Metro Arts.

Sexy, intelligent, thought provoking. Are they all these things? We’ll never know. The only thing that’s for sure: they are downright genius and on the comeback tour of the millennium.

Get intimate with Valencia Low-Fi, Amaro Mayfair and Sutro, as they perform your favourite sonic memoirs from years past. Prepare yourself for classic hits such as “Clap My Beat” and “Titties in Paradise”, and if you’re lucky they may even perform some new works of genius.

THE ARTISTS

The Architects of Sound
The Architects of Sound are an established Brisbane-based alternative, independent electronic trash trio whose native, instrumental sound was forged in a West End garage during a fierce electrical storm in 2012. Maintaining an anti-careerist, anti-music industry attitude, the trio rose to public recognition in early 2013 after a rare underground showcase of a compilation demo-tape went viral on Vine, garnering strong positive critical acclaim in numerous underground Brisbane music zines. Regarded for their minimalist, stripped-down vocal style, meditative and organic post-electro anthems and low-fi music aesthetic, the trio have released their EP The Holy Trinity (2016), and begun work on their second debut album ARTFAP to be released exclusively through Limewire; a sonic exploration of the abstract concepts of divinity, desire and sacrifice in contemporary art culture.

Bring A Plate (BAP)
Bring A Plate (BAP) is an inclusive dance company that has been bringing people together, celebrating diversity, and creating safe spaces since 2017. BAP can be found activating urban and green spaces through participatory dance and storytelling across Meanjin and beyond. Founded on the pillars of community, inclusion, creativity, agency, sustainability, and fun, BAP challenges Australian society’s perception of who can dance, how to dance, and where to dance.  We do this through our weekly outdoor community dance classes, site-specific performances and flashmobs, inclusive dance parties, and dancing in public whenever we can. 

The People’s Dance Party has been running sporadically since 2019, bringing together a menagerie of professional dance artists and community performers from across Meanjin’s incredibly rich and resilient dance communities. It aims to educate, cross-pollinate and stimulate both artists and audiences.  We guarantee you will be moved!

This exhibition of contemporary Japanese art observes 10 years on from the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami.

Japanese artists Lieko Shiga, Motoyuki Shitamichi, Masahiro Hasunuma, Kyun-chome, Masaharu Satō, Natsumi Satō and Haruka Komori, along with Japanese-Australian artists Chaco Katō and Mayu Kanamori, address and record the physical and social impacts of major loss on what could be described as ‘compassionate grounds’. This term is commonly heard in pandemic times when discussing exceptions for those suffering, but in this case is an artistic reference to the fraught relationship many disaster survivors have with their lost or unrecognisable lands and homes.

THE ARTISTS

Masahiro Hasunuma was born 1981 in Tokyo and completed graduate studies at Tokyo University of the Arts in 2010. In 2016 he received a Japanese government sponsored scholarship to continue his creative studies in Berlin. His work has been part of the 2015 Echigo-Tsumari Triennale and the 2016 Setouchi Triennale. His drawings and watercolour landscapes are presented as both video and analogue animations via flip books (kinora). www.hasunuma-masahiro.com/

Chaco Katō was born in Japan and moved from Tokyo to Melbourne in the late 1990s. She studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and gained a Master of Fine Arts from the Victorian College of the Arts in 1998. In 2009 she founded the Slow Art Collective, a collaborative project seen in National Gallery of Victoria, Gertrude Contemporary Art Space, and the Ian Potter Museum of Arts. As a solo artist, Katō has been an exhibiting artist-in-residence in Kochi AIR, as well as delivering projects in France and Singapore. www.chacokato.com/

Kyun-chome is a two-person art unit, including Eri Homma and Nabuchi, established in 2011. They work closely with communities to create art that will benefit both the artists and their subjects. They began making works together to artistically respond to the March 2011 earthquake, tsunami and ongoing nuclear crisis. One of their earliest projects was collaborating with Fukushima evacuees at their temporary housing outside the evacuation zone. www.kyunchome.com

Natsumi Seo & Haruka Komori have collaborated since 2012. Seo was born in Tokyo in 1988 and Komori in Shizuoka in 1989. Together they graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts and moved to Rikuzentaka in the Tōhoku region in 2012 to respond to the town’s decimation and post-tsunami recovery. Their film studio NOOK specialises in documentary films about the Tohoku region. They continue to take their film, photography, text and art works to small spaces across Japan. Masaharu Satō was born in 1973 in Oita and died in 2019 in Tokyo. Satō studied painting at Tokyo University of the Arts and sculpture at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf, Germany. He received the Special Award at the 12th Taro Okamoto Award for Contemporary Art in 2009. Solo exhibitions included Hara Museum of Contemporary Art (Tokyo). He was also shown in group exhibitions in France, China, Serbia and the US, and his final exhibition as a living artist was ‘Roppongi Crossing’ at the Mori Art Museum in 2019. 

Lieko Shiga was born in 1980 in Aichi prefecture and currently lives and works in Miyagi in the Tohoku region of Japan. She underwent art education at the Chelsea College of Art in London. In addition to her highly successful photobooks, in 2015 she was included in the 8th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art and in 2020 she had a solo exhibition at the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum. www.liekoshiga.com/

Motoyuki Shitamichi was born in 1979 in Okayama, and lives and works in Aichi. His work was recently seen as part of the Japan Pavilion at the 2019 Venice Biennale. His work has been exhibited since 2001 in Japan and since 2008 internationally. Exhibitions have included Gwangju Biennale in 2012 and 2018, Mori Art Museum’s ‘Roppongi Crossing’ series in 2013 and a solo exhibition on Setouchi art island in 2019, where now lives and works. m-shitamichi.com/

Mayu Kanamori was born 1963 in Tokyo and migrated to Sydney in 1981. She is a multi-disciplinary artist, photographer, poet and playwright. With a background in photographic and radio journalism, she is also founder of Nikkei Japan, a group devoted to researching and interpreting the history of Japanese diaspora in Australia. Kanamori has undergone several artist residencies including National Library of Australia, and had exhibitions across Australian academic, art and theatre institutions since 1996. https://mayu.com.au/

Emily Wakeling is a curator and art writer specialising in contemporary Japanese art. She has a Masters in Art History from the University of Queensland. After several years in Tokyo as a lecturer, editor and art writer, Emily was part of the curatorial team for the 9th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art at Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art. She is currently Assistant Curator at Artspace Mackay.

As the current Brisbane lockdown has been extended, the West End Film Festival can no longer proceed in our theatre. However, some good news, you will still be able to get your film fix from the comfort of your home, as the 2021 WEFF program of short films will now be delivered online through Vimeo.

Current ticket holder will now have received full access details via email, and online bookings for new ticket buyers open on Thursday 5 August. 

WEFF is back in 2021! Well, we were back, celebrating our 11th year of sharing great Australian short films with Brisbane audiences. Then Covid hit. And then lockdown…

And now we’re back again! This time, for the first time, online here on Vimeo On Demand. TICKETS GO ON SALE FROM THU 5 AUGUST 2021.

We’re offering, with our Official Selection filmmakers permission, two great sessions of Australian shorts most of which were made around the country over the past 12 months.

Each session runs for just over 95 minutes and offers you 13 fantastic and diverse films we’ve selected as our final program. You can even vote on your favourite film by entering your unique confirmation code from Vimeo into our voting system.

WEFF was established in 2009 by a group of local film makers focused on supporting grassroots film makers, and continues to connect with this founding objective today.
