Subtitle Iran is a research-based photo series that explores the ways Western film and television has perceived Iran for the past several decades, mainly before and after the Iranian Revolution of 1979.

THE ARTISTS

Katayoun Javan

Katayoun Javan is an Iranian Australian photographer and video artist. Through documentary photography, portraiture, and use of found photos and videos, she draws on personal and public stories in order to explore notions of family, home, memory, displacement, and the Iranian Diaspora. Most of her works are somehow related to Iran from a migrant point of view.  She completed a Master of Fine Art in research in 2013 and has taken residencies in Australia and exhibited in solo and group shows in Australia, Iran and internationally.

Born out of a desire to extend tenderness,  elevation and appreciation to culturally diverse voices, ANTHEM ARI aims to provide a dedicated platform to celebrate the practices of First Nations, diasporic, and LGBTQI+ identifying artists of colour in Australia.

Co-founders Lucy Nguyên-Hunt, Reina Takeuchi, Rhanjell Villanueva, Ruaa Al-Rikabi and Keemon Williams will transform the gallery into a simulated museum space, exorcising the sordid histories of institutional race representation and intergenerational trauma embedded within the experiences of the artists.

THE ARTISTS

Lucy Nguyễn-Hunt
Lucy Nguyễn-Hunt is an interdisciplinary Vietnamese and Samoan/Cook Islander Australian artist with an abiding passion for sharing lived experiences through her artistic practice. Namely, this manifests as dismantling preconceived notions of identity through the lens of a camera and her culturally hybrid and queer gaze. Working predominantly in photography and moving image and implicating the body as self as a material form, Nguyễn-Hunt investigates the structures in place with consistently others outliers to a socially constructed ‘standard’. Regarding her practice as a safe space for licking her own wounds, vulnerability, self-awareness and authentic representation is at the heart of her work. Nguyễn-Hunt works to prioritise representation and visibility, and voice lived experiences through the process of self-negotiation and preservation.

Reina Takeuchi
Reina Takeuchi is an Australian-Japanese artist-researcher, dance maker, curator and writer interested in interdisciplinary collaboration and facilitating embodied experiences of contemporary art. She explores how sensorial experience can be enhanced through ritualistic performance, interactive installations and time based media. Her work utilises choreographic processes and the transitory qualities of sound and action to meditate on transculturation, displacement, diaspora and the ethereal experiences of her peripatetic upbringing across Japan, India, Thailand and Australia. These processes allow for a clarity of somatic contemplation for the artist and she, in turn, explores the potential for this sensitivity to be shared with the viewer.

Rhanjell Villaneuva
Rhanjell Villanueva is an emerging Meanjin-based (Brisbane) Filipino artist whose practice critically analyses the traditional Filipino culture against the language and values of western societies. In response to his upbringing, his practice traverses the multitude and intricacies of cultural identity by unraveling post-colonial patterns and cultural conflict. Working across an array of media including sculpture, moving image, and video installation, Villanueva materialises deep transcultural knowledge and narratives rooted from oppression and the feeling of displacement. The resulting works focus on decolonising the eye, demonstrating the subjectivity of ‘foreign in a domestic sense’ towards the metaphysics of Filipino Futurism. By sharing tales of the diaspora, he aims to engage with other persons of colour and urge them to consider what they could become, beyond what they are expected to be.

Ruaa Al-Rikabi
Ruaa Al-Rikabi is a Iraqi-Syrian Australian emerging contemporary artist whose practice investigates themes of intersectional identity, self-preservation and re-representation of desirability. Ruaa’s practice looks at the rich experience of intersectional identities and how this can be linked to experiences of displacement and difference, shown through an ongoing development of a living archive of her self-identity. Within her practise, Ruaa aims to create space for other marginalised communities by encouraging radical expression of self and multifaceted identities. Ruaa employs materials which she deems significant to her self-identity as surrogates to encapsulate her lived experiences, this includes hair, food and photographs. Through rejecting essentialist assumptions about intersectional BIPOC identity, Ruaa’s practice aims to engage in an act of decolonisation that empowers and liberates intersectional identities.

Keemon Williams
Keemon Williams is an Indigenous Meanjin-based (Brisbane) artist of Koa, Kuku Yalanji and Meriam Mer descent. He utilizes a diverse range of mediums and performative elements to highlight the relationships between location, personal and cultural histories, and the broader context of being “Australian.” Rendering speculative embodiments of culture through contemporary forms, his work investigates culture’s innate ability to adapt to oppressive systems and claim agency through new material processes. Keemon employs this ontology through interrogations of architecture, fashion, mass production and new media devices. By critically engaging with digital and consumerist realms, and their potential for “ethnoplastic” ventures, Keemon reconciles a sense of indigeneity within the everyday.

Sea levels, displacements, poverty… who is listening?

Through rising sea levels, and open conflict between Government and Rebel forces, a remote island country is at tipping point, facing imminent environmental, economical and social collapse.

Out of the chaos, five stories of  integrity, idealism, justice, compassion and hope emerge.

From five fabulous emerging female playwrights, this ambitious new work responds to the looming ecological crisis, in an effort to find equality and balance.

THE ARTISTS

HANNAH BELANSZKY – PLAYWRIGHT

Hannah Belanszky is an emerging writer, actor and Yuwaalaraay woman based in Brisbane. Her focus is on telling Aboriginal stories and creating work that is bold, imaginative and female driven. Hannah’s play don’t ask what the bird look like was a finalist for the 2018-19 Queensland Premier’s Drama Award and was commissioned by Queensland Theatre. She wrote and directed her cabaret The Wives of Wolfgang which was performed at Brisbane Powerhouse in 2017 and toured to Fringe World Perth and Adelaide Fringe in 2020 where it was awarded Best Cabaret at the Adelaide Fringe Weekly Awards. Her play Shadow in a Dress was developed through QPAC/Playlab Theatre’s ‘Sparks’ program for First Nations writers and was programmed at La Boite HWY.  (Read full bio)

MADELEINE BORDER – PLAYWRIGHT

Madeleine Border is a Brisbane based theatre maker, performer, and writer. She was one of Playlabs Young Playwright-in-Residence participants for 2019 and is currently involved in Playlabs 2020 Incubator program. She co-founded a theatre collective, Yours Sincerely, who created original works for FAST in 2018 with ‘Sometimes it’s Hot like the Sun’, and ‘This Fantastic Plastic Planet’ as part of Backbones Residency program in 2019. After finishing an undergraduate degree, majoring in Drama and Political Science, she finished her studies by completing a Masters of Writing, Editing and Publishing at the University of Queensland in 2019.

EMILY BURTON – PLAYWRIGHT

Emily Burton is an actress, theatre-maker, playwright and teaching artist. As an actress, her production credits include: Storm Boy (MTC/QT); Single Asian Female (Laboite Theatre Company/Belvior); The Seagull, Oedipus Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, The Fledglings, Riley Valentine (QT); The Wider Earth (QT/Sydney Festival/Dead Puppets Society); A Midsummer Night’s Dream (LaBoite Theatre Company); A Tribute of Sorts (QT/Monster’s Appear/Laboite Theatre). Emily has performed nationally with numerous acclaimed Independent Theatre companies including Dead Puppets Society, Imaginary Theatre Company, Monster’s Appear and Grin and Tonic Theatre Troupe. Major Awards include: Matilda Award for Best Actress in a Lead Role in A Tribute of Sorts; A recipient of Queensland Theatre Independents Resources Funding; and a proud participant in the Playlab Incubator 2018 playwriting program. LAUREN SHERRITT – PLAYWRIGHT

Lauren is a playwright and director. Her plays Sans Love (2014) and One Black Mark (2015)were produced at Anywhere Theatre Festival, and her monologue The Panel was published in ATYP’s The Voices Project: Encore Edition. In 2017, she wrote interactive digital story Master of Time for Story City, produced as part of celebrations to mark 50 Years of Landscape Architecture at QUT. Lauren has participated in Playlab’s Incubator program, ATYP’s Fresh Ink Mentoring Program and ATYP’s National Studio.

SARAH WILSON – PLAYWRIGHT

Sarah Wilson is an emerging Brisbane based writer. Sarah was a member of QTC’s Young Writers Group in 2016. She was a part of Queensland Theatre’s Playwrights 18-26 Program in 2017, where she created her play Recreational Mathematics. In 2018 Sarah wrote and developed her latest work, The Kmart Chronicles, as part of Playlab’s Incubator program. Her short story, First Do No Harm, was published as part of the Arts Alliance of Pine Rivers’ 2014 anthology Alpha and Omega. Sarah is currently undertaking an Honours degree in Drama at the University of Queensland, having earned a Bachelors of Science/Arts dual degree with majors in Mathematics, Computer Science, and an extended major in Drama.

CURATED BY KYLE WEISE

Screens are part of our daily habits, yet their perpetual place in our consciousness is physically provisional, requiring constant updates, maintenance and replacement.  Bringing together work by Australian and international artists, New for Old uses the figure of an obsolete screen technology, the Cathode-ray tube (CRT)  television, to reflect on cycles of technological obsolescence, exhibition design, and the relationship between technology and memory.

The screen is at threshold of two worlds. We share space with its physical form, while being transported by its fleeting images. Across the exhibition is a recognition that screens, and their ongoing cycles of obsolescence and aesthetic transformation, are both a cultural and a material force, continuing to haunt successive media, their users and the planet.

THE ARTISTS

Jeron Braxton 

Jeron Braxton is a self-taught 3-D animator using surreal late-’90s video-game aesthetics to explore the Black experience in America. 

Stanton Cornish-Ward

Stanton Cornish-Ward is a self taught director and editor based in Melbourne. Traditionally trained in Fashion Design (Bachelor of Design (Fashion) (Honours) at RMIT University), her film work crosses the genres of fashion film, music video, video art and short film. Her work looks at the fallacy of memory, intergenerational trauma, and emerging technologies. She has been part of the official selections of film festivals in Australia, Bulgaria, Canada, Denmark, France, Italy, Ireland, Romania, Spain, Mexico, U.K, and U.S.A. She also works as one half of the creative duo ‘Hiball’ with Alexandra Kirwood, a production company that focuses on moving images for the digital world.

Trent Crawford

Trent Crawford is a Melbourne based artist working with photography, video, and installation. His work considers the effects images and image-based technology have on human perception and agency. In 2019 he exhibited works at Hobiennale (Hobart), Myojuji Sarue (Tokyo), Kuiper Projects (Brisbane) and held a solo exhibition at c3 (Melbourne). He completed a BFA (Honours) at the Victorian College of the Arts In 2017, where he currently teaches Extended Practice in the Visual Art Studio program

Susan Hawkins

A battle demonstrating struggle for agency, Susan Hawkins uses sculpture, installation and sound to unravel the complex dynamic between [wo]man and material. Drawing upon the philosophies of New Materialism, she tests both the physical and metaphysical limits of the reclaimed industrial and domestic objects she works with. Using process and materials that highlight broader social and environmental implications, Hawkins questions her position as both producer and consumer. Relying on the materials to speak their own truth, Hawkins’ work explores how dualities such as the old and the new, the human and the inhuman play out in action. Hawkins completed a Bachelor of Fine Art (Sculpture, Jewellery and Small Objects) in 2014 at the Queensland College of Art, and has since exhibited at Blindside (Melbourne), Outer Space (Brisbane), The Museum of Brisbane, and Metro Arts (Brisbane), among others.

Danny Jarratt

Danny Jarratt is an emerging queer digital artist exploring installation art. His work reflects a keen interest in the intersection of pop culture, queer theory and resistance. His installations function as micro utopias and queer counterpublics which allow people to escape the imposing day to day ideologies and expectations, with fun and convenient methods, such as videogame design. He graduated at the University of South Australia with Bachelor of Art & Design (Honours) and currently is undertaking a residency at George Street Studios. His work has been exhibited at MOD., FELTspace, Collective Haunt, Seventh Gallery and Praxis Artspace.

Daniel McKewen

Daniel McKewen is a Brisbane-based artist whose practice investigates the intersections of contemporary art, popular culture, economics, politics, and screen-based mass media. Working appropriatively across a range of media including video installation, his work creatively and speculatively examines how the formal and symbolic conventions of these institutionalised structures operate culturally and politically. The resulting artworks explore and express how our subjective and inter-subjective interactions with these structures can allow us to make sense of our own social experiences. In 2013 McKewen was awarded his Doctorate of Philosophy from Queensland University of Technology. His artwork is held in private collections and has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including in NEW14 at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, and You Imagine What You Desire at the 19th Biennale of Sydney. McKewen is currently a Lecturer in Media Arts at QUT. Daniel McKewen is represented by Milani Gallery, Brisbane.

Penelope Umbrico

Penelope Umbrico works across photography, appropriation and installation to examine contemporary networks of image distribution as both a conceptual springboard and a material form. Based in New York City, she has exhibited widely internationally, and her work is represented in numerous major museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Guggenheim Museum, New York, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Perez Art Museum, Miami. Penelope Umbrico is represented by Bruce Silverstein Gallery, New York and David B Smith Gallery, Denver.

As day turns to night the sunset sky lights up with pastel tones and golden rays, twinkles of light come to life and dance through the landscape. These twinkles once filled this environment which was full of swamps and rainforests, home to fireflies. The fireflies would hover over the waterways sometimes in swarms.The fireflies are gone now and the city is built over many of these waterways. The fireflies and fires were the first lights of the land.

Night Dancers pays respect to the First Peoples of the land and the Country Metro Arts Building is located on.

Elisa Jane Carmichael

Quandamooka woman Elisa Jane Carmichael is a multidisciplinary artist who honours her salt-water heritage by incorporating materials collected from Country, embracing traditional techniques, and expressing contemporary adaptations through painting, waving, and textiles. She comes from a family of artists and curators, and works closely with her female kin to revive, nurture and preserve cultural knowledge and practice. Elisa is a descendant of the Ngugi people, one of three clans who are the traditional custodians of Quandamooka, also known as Yoolooburrabee – people of the sand and sea. Quandamooka Country comprises the waters and lands of and around Moreton Bay, south-east Queensland, Australia.

A Drowning Sim’s Cry for Help humorously tries to make sense of the absurdity of the everyday, mental health, and mortality by taking cues from computer games and children’s entertainment.

Various works in the exhibition celebrate and critique the naive and humorous ways the media censors explicit content to provide a temporary relief from reality. The use of humour is explored on one hand, as a way to cope with intense emotion and trauma, and on the other, as a psychological tool to revisit, process and gain perspective on past events. 

The exhibition’s title references the 2004 life simulation PC game, The Sims 2 and the particular act of a player drowning and ultimately killing their Sim.

THE ARTISTS

Ursula Larin
Ursula Larin is a Brisbane-based artist who uses sculpture, video, photography and installation to reinterpret small, poignant moments from her everyday experience. Her sculptures either draw inspiration from, or closely replicate the peculiar details from these  moments through an assemblage of accessible scrap, craft and building materials and an amateur, do-it-yourself skillset. These sculptures function as allegories that use humour, parody, and a childlike playfulness to explore existential quandaries around the absurd, awkward, confusing and disappointing aspects of the human experience. Ursula completed a Bachelor of Fine Art (Honours) at Queensland University of Technology in 2016, and has exhibited locally at Artist Run Initiatives including Cut Thumb and Kunstbunker.

The Hive Collective
Hive is a new theatre collective led by Artistic Directors Heather Fairbairn, Heidi Manché and Kate Wild. These three established directors are thrilled to be producing and supporting each other’s work, creating jobs for local artists and offering quality independent theatre for Brisbane’s audiences.

Heidi Manché – Director
Hive Co-Artistic Director Heidi Manché studied theatre in Sydney and La Sapienza Rome University in Italy, with a project to work alongside Nobel laureate Dario Fo. Heidi translated many of Fo’s texts and was a core ensemble member of the theatre troupe Stalker, touring throughout Italy. On her return to Australia, she became Artistic Director of The Crypt Theatre, Sydney, producing and directing several plays including Can’t Pay, Won’t Pay by Dario Fo, A Woman Alone by Franca Rame, It’s all in the Timing by David Ives and Charmayne (award-winning documentary – Sydney Film School). In Brisbane she founded theatre company Room to Play which has produced and directed The Bald Prima Donna by Eugene Ionesco (Melbourne Fringe Festival), Afterplay by Brian Friel (Theatre 505) Mistero Buffo by Dario Fo (Bille Brown, supported by Queensland Theatre), Red Sky Morning by Tom Holloway and The Eisteddfod by Lally Katz (Metro Arts).

Van Badham – Playwright
Van Badham is the award-winning writer of more than 30 internationally-produced plays for stage and radio. She writes a weekly column for The Guardian and appears regularly on television and radio as a commentator, critic and activist. Van has had work developed and produced across Australia, Europe and North America. Her most recent Australian productions include Banging Denmark for the Sydney Theatre Company and The Bloody Chamber for Malthouse. In Britain, Van was writer-in-residence at LAMDA for two years and has worked with the Royal Court Theatre, the Bush (for Paines Plough), Nabokov, the Battersea Arts Centre, Luxi and Theatre503, as well as at the Edinburgh Fringe and on the touring circuit. Van’s radio commissions have been for the BBC World Service, Radio 4, and Radio 3 and her first screenplay, We Come Home, was developed with a grant from the Australian Writers’ Guild.

Elektra sent Orestes into exile when he was just 11. He was the next in line for her father’s throne. Nine years later he has come of age. Now he’s on way to join Elektra and take the ultimate revenge. There will be blood.

Heather Fairbairn – Director
Hive Co-Artistic Director Heather Fairbairn directs theatre and contemporary opera. Working throughout Australia, Europe and the UK, her directing credits include Silk Moth by Bushra El-Turk (Arcola Theatre, London), The Mutant Man by Christopher Bryant (The Space Arts Centre, London), The Magic Flute (European Tour), and Sunnytown by Krystal Sweedman (La Boite). Heather regularly collaborates with renowned theatre director Katie Mitchell, working on Ariadne auf Naxos and Alcina (Festival d’Aix), Lucia di Lammermoor (Royal Opera House), and Ophelias Zimmer by Alice Birch (Schaubühne Berlin). In 2019 and 2020, Heather directed the revival of Katie Mitchell’s Ariadne auf Naxos with new casts at Théâtre des Champs Elysées, Finnish National Opera, and the Royal Danish Opera. As assistant director, credits include: Lord of the Flies directed by Kip Williams (Sydney Theatre Company), Accidental Death of An Anarchist directed by Sarah Giles (Sydney Theatre Company), Orpheus & Eurydice directed by Yaron Lifschitz (Opera Queensland), and As You Like It directed by David Berthold (La Boite).

Jada Alberts – Playwright
Jada hails from Larrakia, Yanuwa, Bardi and Wardaman country in the Top End of Australia and she shares her unique perspective with audiences as a young Indigenous Australian woman. She works professionally as an actor, director and writer. Jada was an associate artist at Belvoir in 2014-2015 and was the recipient of the 2013 Balnaves Foundation Indigenous Playwright’s Award. In 2014 her debut work Brothers Wreck was part of the main stage season at Belvoir to critical acclaim, which she then went on to direct in 2018 at the Malthouse Theatre and the State Theatre Company of South Australia to rave reviews. In 2016 Jada directed her first show at Belvoir Title & Deed. In 2016-2017 Jada completed a writing fellowship with Bell Shakespeare and in 2017 Jada was the Assistant Director on Sydney Theatre Company’s production Three Sisters, directed by Kip Williams.

Anne-Louise Sarks – Playwright
Anne-Louise works internationally as a director, writer and dramaturg. In 2019 she directed Avalanche for The Barbican Centre (London). In 2018 she was Artistic Director of the Lyric Ensemble at the Lyric Hammersmith, directed a new production of her acclaimed Medea for Theater Basel, directed a new adaptation An Enemy of the People for Belvoir, and her production of Sarah Kane’s Blasted at Malthouse was nominated for four green room awards including Best Director. Anne-Louise was Resident Director at Belvoir from 2013-2015. In 2011 she was Director in Residence at Malthouse Theatre Company, and from 2010-2013 Anne-Louise was Artistic Director of The Hayloft Project. In 2015 Anne-Louise directed a re-imagining of Medea at The Gate Theatre, London winning five 2013 Sydney Theatre Awards. It was also awarded an AWGIE for Best Stage Play and in 2013 was nominated for four Helpmann Awards including Best Direction, Best New Australian Work and Best Play.

The Last Bastion of Laziness is an exhibition by David Attwood of new sculptural assemblages that combine cat scratchers, found Garfield plush toys and infant Nike trainers.

Playing on the infamous laziness of cartoon character Garfield, the exhibition is interested in ideas around work ethic, productivity and aspiration, and how these concepts materialise in the consumer culture of late capitalism.

David Attwood
David Attwood’s work draws on a global lexicon of well-known brands and products to explore the influence of consumer culture on human behaviour and relations. He holds a PhD in Art from Curtin University, and in 2019 completed the SOMA Summer program, SOMA, Mexico City. With theorist Francis Russell, Attwood is the co-editor of the book The Art of Laziness: Contemporary Art and Post-work Politics (Art + Australia, 2020) and runs the project space Disneyland Paris.

Lacey – Law – Lobwein is an experimental art collaboration initiated by three emerging Brisbane-based artists who share a common practice of working with digital video and screen-based media.

At Arm’s Length explores the nature of virtual and physical collaboration as a reaction to how their practices have changed as a result of the current pandemic.

This exhibition is part of Common Ground: Bus Projects x Metro Arts and an adapted version of the exhibition will be exhibited at Bus Projects in October, 2022.

THE ARTISTS

Briony Law
Briony Law is an emerging artist who works primarily with moving image and installation. Her practice explores aspects of human ecology and systems of mediation, and the potential of mediation to inform attitudes toward ecology. Graduating in 2017 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Honours from the Queensland University of Technology, her most recent projects were exhibited at Outer Space and Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity.

Olivia Lacey
Olivia Lacey employs processes of transcription and translation to explore the ambiguities, slippages or humour that can arise in interpersonal interactions. Working across moving image, installation and text, she combines referents appropriated from pop music lyrics in order to examine the romantic dialogue as an intersubjective space of exchange. Lacey graduated from a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) at the Queensland University of Technology in 2017.

Guy Lobwein
Guy Lobwein is a Brisbane-based emerging artist currently undertaking his Doctorate of Philosophy at Queensland University of Technology. Graduating in 2020 with a Masters in Philosophy, his research focuses on the use of expanded reality technologies in contemporary art and how experimental creative practice can generate experiential and critically reflective experiences.

Kate Wild – Director
Hive co-Artistic Director Kate Wild is the award-winning writer and director of The Sound of a Finished Kiss. Having worked in theatres throughout London, Bristol and Melbourne she has returned to Brisbane, founding Now Look Here and directing Splendour, A Slight Ache and The Seagull for the company.

Zoey Dawson – Playwright
Zoey Dawson is a theatre maker and screenwriter based in Naarm/Melbourne on the lands of the Kulin nation. Her recent credits include as playwright, Australian Realness (Malthouse Theatre), Conviction (ZLMD Shakespeare/Darebin Arts), Welcome to Nowhere (Monash University/Malthouse), Calamity (MTC NEON/ZLMD Shakespeare), The Unspoken Word is Joe (MKA/La Mama/Griffin Theatre/Brisbane Festival), Madonna Arms (I’m Trying To Kiss You/Next Wave) and I Know There’s A Lot Of Noise Outside But You Have To Close Your Eyes (I’m Trying To Kiss You/LaMama/NIDA). As well as performing in much of her own work, she appeared in a world-ish tour of The Economist (MKA/World Theatre Festival/Edinburgh Fringe), for which she was nominated for a UK Stage Award for Best Actress. As director, she staged an all-female Romeo and Juliet at fortyfivedownstairs (ZLMD Shakespeare. She won the Melbourne Festival Discovery Award for The Unspoken Word is “Joe”

TANGERINE HOUR  by NDRNCE 

Suburbia is set alight and bathed in grapefruit. A town burns in silence, sun slinks into retreat.

Two women lay their bodies beneath a lamppost, taking advantage of fleeting light to spill their hearts to one another, willingly accepting of the pain, gain, love and acceptance true honesty has to offer. Here, they find themselves in the Tangerine Hour. The softest and most powerful time of day, transformation is bound to take place as long as they commit themselves to honesty.

When fear overcomes truth, Mothman finds herself caught in the Tangerine Hour, unable to free herself from the flickering lamplight. Unaware of her trap, she flies in an infinite loop of denial, fixation and warped memories while trying to navigate by the wrong moon. TANGERINE HOUR is a contemporary, physical performance grounded in soft light and suburban intimacy, created by emerging performance ensemble, NDRNCE.

Afterwards, Kitch & The Barefoot Boyz take to the stage to debut their new music which will be featured in this exciting new work.

Born from a reverence for mundanity and unearthing of our bodies’ limits, NDRNCE present stories of transformation, failure, reluctant intimacy and willing sacrifice. Our performances are highly physical; merging complex choreographic scores with verbatim and poetic texts to embody the power of often overlooked experiences.

Enlarged animal cells take over Metro Arts! Bella Deary examines the integral shared biology of humans and animals through these magnified latex cells.

Organic Algorithm investigates biological commonalities amongst all animals by examining an intrinsic and fundamental component of any living body, the animal cell. This is achieved through the creation of a series of pink latex sculptures of these enlarged cells. Such magnification of the cell prompts viewers to re-imagine and re-define the body’s relationship to the natural environment.

These sculptures are attached to the banister of the New Benner Theatre in a formation mimicking the growth of parasitic barnacles. The implication of organic life overtaking an industrial space advocates for a future whereby natural life becomes more prominent than human constructions. This ultimately places a critical eye on our response as a society to climate change, and encourages the audience to focus on what connects us to our environment rather than what sets us apart.

Bella Deary is an emerging Meanjin Visual Artist whose practice gathers influence from biological and ecological science, and climate activism to promote the equality of humans with the natural environment. Deary often uses latex as a key material to construct installations which resemble the organic qualities of the human body.

THE PANEL

Amelia McLeish / Nextdoor ARI 
Amelia McLeish is a contemporary visual and sound artist practicing primarily in Meanjin (Brisbane). Her practice utilises participation, sound and humour to critique the arts institutions and develop artist-based communities. She has exhibited with the IMA, Boxcopy and The Walls, and completed a studio residency with OuterSpace. Amelia is currently studying a Masters of Philosophy at Queensland University of Technology, where she is researching Artist-Run Initiatives and contemporary Australian art in the 21st century through an institutional critique-based artistic practice. She is a founding co-director of Nextdoor ARI and is also an ARI organiser at Wreckers Artspace.

Rebecca Ross / The Walls Art Space
Rebecca Ross lives on Queensland’s Gold Coast where she works as an artist, academic and director of The Walls Art Space. Rebecca’s work is concerned with mapping the junctures of site, situation and sensation. Since completing a Master of Fine Art at Queensland University of Technology (2005) she has undertaken major art projects for Festival 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and Bleach Festival, and participated in international artist in residence programs in Malta, Italy and New Zealand. Rebecca has exhibited at the Embassy of Australia in Washington D.C. U.S.A. (2012), been awarded the Rome Studio at the British School at Rome by the Australia Council for the Arts (2013) and supported by the City of Gold Coast to undertake a mentorship and travel to Los Angeles and Miami, U.S.A. (2014). Rebecca has been actively involved in the contemporary art scene in South East Queensland since the millennium and her contribution to the Gold Coast arts ecology has been recognised with an International Women’s Day Leadership Award (2020).

Lily Daoud / Habibti Collective
Habibti Collective is an emerging collective which brings together creatives from different parts of the Arab diaspora in Australia. The collective aims to generate creative connections as well between artists around Brisbane who identify as part of this community. We also aim to generate new work which explores the experiences and stories of Arab diaspora in Australia, Brisbane. Our focus is exploring; what it means to move here, grow up here, but have roots somewhere else.

Thom Browning / Imaginary Theatre
Thom is a Brisbane based arist specialising in the creation of theatre, installation and arts learning experiences for children and their communities. His experience spans performance, installation, music, and creative technology, whilst working as a director, producer, facilitator, curator, sound and video designer, and DJ. Thom is the Artistic Director of Imaginary Theatre. His work for Imaginary is regarded as amongst the most innovative sites of practice in Australian theatre for young audiences and has been seen nationally and internationally by over 180,000 people. Thom is an Associate Director with Punchdrunk Enrichment (UK), and has directed the Australian production of Punchdrunk’s ‘The Lost Lending Library’ for Festival 2018 Gold Coast, and Brisbane Festival 2020. In 2015 Thom directed the performance installation World Images for acclaimed Danish company Theatre Workshop Madam Bach which was presented in 30 venues in Denmark, Italy, France, China, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Lithuania and Greenland.

Amy-Clare McCarthy / Milani Gallery
Amy-Clare McCarthy is a curator based in Brisbane. She is currently Gallery Manager at Milani Gallery; as part of this role she curates the program for CARPARK, a project space under the building. Previously she was the Curator (Exhibition Program) at Metro Arts, and served as the inaugural chair of the board of Outer Space ARI. She is one half of McCarthy-Swann Projects, a curatorial collaboration with Kieran Swann.

THE ARTISTS

Lewis Treston 
Lewis Treston is a playwright, screenwriter and an artist in residence LaBoite. Full length plays include: IRL (in development with LaBoite) Hubris & Humiliation (in development with STC), Meat Eaters (NIDA, developed by STC), Hot Tub (rehearsed readings at STC and LaBoite), Follow Me Home (ATYP) and Reagan Kelly (NIDA, Metro Arts, Lion and Unicorn Theatre). Short plays include: Condo Osaka and 1800-Real-Talk (Periscope Productions), Ghost Hunter (White Rabbit Theatre) and The Arcade (ATYP). Screenplays include: Elvistown (in development with Screen Queensland), Blood and Tinsel (Essential Media) and Fireworks (Sunday Pictures).  He is a graduate from QUT and NIDA and is currently a research student at UQ investigating camp humour.

Nathan Sibthorpe 
Nathan Sibthorpe is an award-winning contemporary performance-maker and AV Designer based in Brisbane, Australia. Currently, he is the director of Counterpilot – the collective of techno-troublemakers responsible for interactive transmedia performance works like Crunch Time (2018) and Truthmachine (2019). Nathan was previously Queensland Theatre Company’s Geek-In-Residence in 2012-14; the Festival Director of Short+Sweet Queensland from 2013-16; an Australia Council JUMP artist in 2012; and the Creative Director for Markwell Presents Cinematic Theatre Company from 2016-18. Nathan has been nominated for eight Matilda Awards, receiving the award for Best AV Design in 2017 (Blue Bones) and the Lord Mayor’s Award for Best New Australian Work in 2018 (Crunch Time). In 2011 he received a Green Room Groundling Award and in 2017 he was the recipient of the Dr Don Batchelor Award for Drama Research at QUT. Nathan teaches performance studies at QUT, where he holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts with distinction, and a Masters Degree in contemporary performance.

Jody Rallah
Jody Rallah is a descendant of the Biri Gubba, Yuggera and Warangu peoples. Rallah is an Indigenous Australian artist who works across, object making, sculptural installation, painting, sound and performance to create knowledge vesselsas embodiments of living histories. She explores how haptic processes of making can be used to create conversations spanning between generations. Connecting community throughout the generations and opening dialogues of cultural exchange to celebrate cultural wealth and enquire how materiality and experience can affect relationships between peoples, place and space and time.

THE ARTISTS

Marisa Artist 
Marisa is an inter-disciplinary artist who weaves together diverse strategies for living, or coping, well in their current situation (urban, neoliberal, anthropocentric, colonial…) They work across disciplines such as embodied movement, social practice and installation both inside and outside institutional contexts, and often collaboratively. They aim to forefront knowledge systems that are often backgrounded such as embodied, sensory or intuitive knowledge. Embracing the complexity of current crises, they promote experiences that are intimate, gentle, self-aware and care-full, without sacrificing strategy and criticality. 

Stable Artspace 
STABLE is a contemporary art space located underneath a Queenslander in Meanjin/Brisbane. It aims to share a wide variety of work, from a wide variety of artists, both emerging and established. STABLE hopes to make a positive contribution to the Brisbane art community and the rich history of artist run initiatives in this city.
