An contemporary dance exploration of identity through the stories of Indigenous women who have come before...
Matriarchs is an exploration of identity through the stories of the women who have come before; Mothers, Grandmothers, Great Grandmothers. This new contemporary dance work by dancer Olivia Adams explores how their experiences as Indigenous women shaped them and therefore their descendants.
Matriarchs picks up the journey of identity in a generation who no longer have to be ashamed of Aboriginality. A generation that must now unpick the lies and work that was done to distance them from their communities.
A journey of reconnecting and intergenerational healing.
From the Artist:
“As First Nations people “the arts” are not just a hobby but an integral part of our knowledge systems and who we are as people. Dance was the catalyst for me to connect with community and the first step in a long journey of finding security in my Aboriginal identity. I want people to be able to experience the power that dance can have to connect, reconnect and heal.” – Olivia Adams

I’m a proud young woman who is an emerging Aboriginal artist from the Wulli Wulli tribe, located inland south-east Queensland.
I use art to convey and cover important topics such as Aboriginal lore, history, rekindling connections, tradition, research and modern challenges. These are things I am strongly passionate about and are reflected in my artwork. I also utilizes art to express my personal journey as I continues to gain understanding about my Aboriginal heritage and grow as an Aboriginal woman in a modern western society.
I am currently in my last year of studying a Bachelor of Contemporary Australian Indigenous Art at QCA Griffith University. My art style is a fusion between contemporary and expressionist with cultural inten created with an explosion of colour and life. I mainly work with acrylic paints, however I also come from a dance background and I like to merge the two visual arts together.
