The Critical Writing Project

The Metro Arts Critical Writing Project was created in 2023 and invited five local writers to produce texts which responded to the 2023 Metro Arts exhibition program. Aiming to stimulate broad reflection on contemporary arts writing, these texts were developed alongside regular group meetings, which included workshops and discussions with guest interlocuters, encompassing editors, curators, artists and writers. Here, writing was approached as a professional, conceptual and social practice.

As one outcome of the program, Metro Arts has collated the exhibition reflections, written by Sam Harrison, Georgia Hayward, Kathleen O’Hagan, Carol Schwarzman and Christian Rizzalli, into a free, digital publication. The program was developed and facilitated by former Metro Arts curator, Kyle Weise, who has also edited the publication.

Guest Interlocuters: Dominique Chen, Caitlin Franzmann, Tara Heffernan, Jane Howard, Louise Mayhew, Tim Riley-Walsh and Elizabeth Willing

Participating writers: Sam Harrison, Georgia Hayward, Kathleen O’Hagan, Carol Schwarzman and Christian Rizzalli.
