Storytellers is a partnership program between QPAC and Metro Arts that began in 2025, designed to realise fresh ideas and foster new voices in theatre. Leveraging both organisations’ strengths in developing original work, this initiative invites First Nations playwrights and physical theatre artists to explore and shape bold new performance concepts.
This program supports emerging to mid-career First Nations artists embarking on the early stages of script and show creation. Guided by experienced industry professionals, participants will engage in a series of workshops and activities aimed at igniting creativity, introducing key elements of theatrical craft, and providing practical tools to develop new work.
Led by renowned dramaturg and directors Nadine McDonald-Dowd and Lara Croydon, five selected artists were chosen to develop their ideas over a 12-month period. The program began with an intensive week-long workshop focused on exploring storytelling through a First Nations lens. Participants have since engaged in fortnightly workshops facilitated by three established First Nations theatre practitioners and receive regular dramaturgical support through one-on-one check-ins.
The program continues in 2026 with intensive development periods, during which participants will refine their works in collaboration with a director and professional actors/performers. This final phase includes a short rehearsal process, offering valuable insight into the realisation of their theatrical vision.
From this creative development program 4 projects from 5 First Nations creatives have emerged.
Information on each project can be found on their pages.
