Project for the Affirmation of the Voice

Project for the Affirmation of the Voice (PROAV) is an artist residency, exhibition and conversation series that will address the polyvocal nature of contemporary feminism. This project is focused on the intersections of language, gender politics and representation as observed in social practices, material archives and cultural texts. Taking as a starting point the provocation that ‘small acts of resistance can create change’, these text-based works will draw specifically on contemporary protest language and feminist social history archives. This project addresses both the nature of collective voice in activism and the differences inherent in any understanding of contemporary intersectional feminism.
Art Feminism Friday

“Feminism, back by popular demand.”
Join artist Rachael Haynes in her studio at Hope Street for Art Feminism Friday on 21st February 2 – 4pm. Bring along a print-out of a feminist news or magazine article, essay or book chapter, for some Friday afternoon conversation and cut-up collage making. This event is part of the Project for the Affirmation of the Voice, which is focused on the intersections of language, gender politics and representation as observed in social practices, material archives and cultural texts. PROAV draws on revisionist strategies to offer a feminist site of reclamation for voices of difference and seeks to work against patriarchal violence, which manifests as silencing and exclusion.
PROAV Studio Remix – Residency Closing Event

While artist-in-residence at Hope Street in February, Rachael has been making new works that address the polyvocal nature of contemporary feminism in the ongoing Project for the Affirmation of the Voice. Taking as a starting point the provocation that ‘small acts of resistance can create change’, these text-based works draw specifically on contemporary protest language and feminist social history archives. This project addresses both the nature of collective voice in activism and the differences inherent in any understanding of contemporary intersectional feminism. The PROAV Studio Remix is an evolving exhibition that brings together new and existing fabric works and drawings. The exhibition is open for viewing on Saturday 29th February 2 – 4pm.
