Interview with the Artists – In the Flesh

HOTMESS are surrealistic party raunch art classes run by Gabrielle Miller and Sophie Taylor.

This March at Metro Arts, HOTMESS present In The Flesh – a surrealistic life drawing experience (with live models!)  that seeks to spark inspiration, challenges norms, and explore the boundaries of artistic expression.

THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE THE SHOW…

Both: Absurd, immersive, cheeky

WHAT CAN AUDIENCES EXPECT?

Both: To lose yourself in the immersive creative process, while being whisked away into alternate worlds of absurdity, raunch, and conceptualism.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF AS A PERFORMER/CREATIVE?

Both: As a visual artist and a theatre performer, together we have combined forces to create a hybrid beast of a show that focuses on coaxing out our audience’s creative expression, and giving them a safe space to do so. We are both mothers and creatives and are intensely passionate about the importance of self-expression as a means of self-care.

WHO INSPIRES YOU AND WHY?

Both: All working creative mums! it ain’t an easy juggle, but how beautiful to share your creativity with your children, instilling in them the importance of pure expression.

Sophie Taylor (ST): My mother is an Indigenous artist, who always made sure to include us kids in her creative practice, showing me the way to authentically express yourself in the world. She is my ultimate inspiration.

Gabrielle Miller (GM): Sellers, Chaplin, Pina Bausch because of their ability to tell stories and express emotion with their bodies. The natural world inspires me. When immersed in it, I enter a state of liberty that allows my creativity to flow.

HOW DID YOU DISCOVER YOUR LOVE FOR PERFORMING ARTS?

ST: My love for Performing arts comes from growing up in a small town where being expressive was dubbed “too much or try hard”. Performing, for me, is a reclamation of my ‘extra-ness’.

GM: Watching old-school cinema led me to discover the freedom and magic that self-expression, performance, and art could bring to daily life.

HOTMESS: In the Flesh premiered as part of Metro Arts’ One Night Stand series 9 March, at New Benner Theatre, West Village, West End.
